Monty the Border Terrier

Debbie and Monty the Border Terrier

I just want to thank you for the help you have given us so far.

My 1.5yr old border terrier had started to be aggressive towards other dogs on the lead and more concerning had bitten a couple of friends for no apparent reason.

On meeting you he bit you as you entered his home. I was horrified and knew I had to do what it takes to regain control. You gave me permission to own a dog and go to work, leaving him alone all day in a rather wonderful kennel, he fits through the cat flap so can be left to roam the house. But my guilt allowed him to dominate me - he owned my life and leapt into my arms when I came home. To make up for my long absences I let him sleep in my bed - well why wouldn't you - he is small, cuddly and comforting. But he is a dog and I realise now I was trying to humanise him, in turn making him in charge - he was pack leader.

I was astonished at the change in him after our first meeting. I was in control in my own home and by the 3rd night he was sleeping downstairs and I could see the way forward. I had a plan and knew what I needed to do, be calm but assertive and to only ask for something when he was on a lead, when I was in control and he was waiting for me to show him the way.

Practice makes perfect and what I now know is there is no quick fix, it's like changing your eating habits for a long term gain. I have to work very hard when out with my dog now, but it's paying off and within one month I feel confident in taking him out, by my side not pulling ahead of me and not having him shout at every four legged friend that passes us.

What I do see now are most dogs out of control - not returning to their owners when called - so long as they don't bite or cause harm then I guess that's OK, but then how do we know after all they are dogs - not humans and need a leader - you.

Thanks Sally.

Debbie
